Rights of the Rainbow community

The rainbow community is a name used for the LGBTQ+ community. They are also known as ‘queer community’. Recently, they have been the talk of the town as more people are getting aware of their rights. By spreading awareness we can make the whole society accept them as equal. They have been victims of various stereotypic comments and its time to throw light on this grievous issue.

What is 377?

377. Unnatural offences: “Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.” It was introduced during the British rule of India in 1861. After repeated hearings in the Supreme Court, an official said that there is “very little scope now” for the law to make bends.

Rights of LGBTQ+

The law regarding the same-sex sexual activity aka 377 of the IPC criminalizes same-sex sexual activity. The Court also ruled that a person’s sexual orientation is a privacy issue, giving hopes to LGBT activists that the Court would soon strike down Section 377. The court will give a verdict before October’18.

On 5 February 2018, the Supreme Court ruled, in a case involving caste councils interfering in marriages, that “no one, either individually or collectively, has the right to interfere in a marriage between two consenting adults.”

While several activists groups are fighting all odds to show their support for this sensitive issue, there is still a certain section of the society against this. It is important to let the rainbow community be a part of this society.
